A 2021 study tested commonly used Black hair products for activity involving estrogen, androgen, progesterone and glucocorticoid receptors.

The researchers found hormonal activity across the products tested, with leave-in conditioners showing some of the highest activity.

The study examined product mixtures in laboratory assays. It does not show that using a specific scalp serum causes hormone disruption in humans.
